What is Total Weight?

When purchasing new carpet, the total weight of the style you choose can make a big difference in how it looks in your home; feels underfoot; and even how long it will last. Manufacturers know that the heavier a carpet’s face weight (the total ounces of the yarn used in making it) makes a big difference in carpet quality. In some instances, dealers and manufactures alike have tried to confuse buyers by adding a heavier backing to the products they sell as a way to convince buyers that they are getting a higher quality carpet product for a cheaper price simply because its total weight is higher than others being sold.

Relying on total weight can be deceiving, leaving you with a lower quality carpet. That’s why it is so important to rely more on a carpet’s face weight than total weight to ensure you are getting the quality you want.
